    ALTO POLIS COMPETITION
    Competition Guidelines

    The Alto Polis Competition is a unique audition designed to highlight the strengths of each contestant, and allow young musicians of varying levels of proficiency to demonstrate their outstanding talent and fulfill their potential in a Showcase recital where they will perform for a distinguished panel of judges.  Constructive comments from the judges will allow each participant to continue in his/her pursuit of excellence in the field of music performance.

    3. When:  April 17, 2010
      1. The Competition
      2. Recital of cellist Ruslan Biryukov (during judges deliberation)
      3. Announcement of the competition winners, awards ceremony and reception.
    1. Awards:
      1. All applicants will be divided into groups.  Awards (first, second and third prizes) will be awarded for each group.  Honorable mentions and ties are allowed.
      2. One Grand Prize will be awarded to the winner of the whole competition.
      3. All participants will be awarded a certificate of participation and medal.
    1. Application deadline:  The complete application package must be postmarked by March 21, 2010.
    2. Applicants will be notified of their audition times no later than the 2nd week of April, 2010.
    3. Audition times, once assigned, CANNOT BE ADJUSTED.
    4. Eligibility:
      1. The competition is open to instrumentalists, singers and chamber music ensembles of any nationality and proficiency levels.
      2. Applicants must not have reached their 25th birthday on the day of the competition.
    1. Repertoire:
      1. Repertoire should select music that would demonstrate the applicant’s breadth of technical and artistic abilities. No specific works or composers are required. Pianists should include solo piano repertoire only (without second piano accompaniment).
      2. Instrumentalists and pianists – Two contrasting selections of different periods, style and tempi.
      3. Singers – Two selections in the original languages and contrasting styles. 
      4. Ensembles – Two contrasting selections of different periods, style and tempi.

     

    1. Memorization – Memorization will be appreciated. However, applicants may perform each of their selected pieces with or without music.
    2. Accompanist - All works, with the exception of the unaccompanied pieces, must be performed with an accompanist.  If applicants do not have their own accompanist, an accompanist can be provided for an additional fee of $100 per participant (includes one rehearsal and one performance).
    3. The Jury will be comprised of esteemed music professionals. 
    4. Decisions of the judges are final and are not subject to change.
    5. The total performance time may not exceed 9 minutes. Judges may stop a contestant in the middle of a piece in order to hear the other selection(s).
    6. Applicants must bring one set of audition music scores for the judging panel.
    7. Alto Polis reserves the right to conduct the audition as a recital, an open audition or a closed audition.
